Taught by an award-winning Docker Captain and DevOps consultant.

Just starting out with Docker? Perfect. This course starts out assuming you're new to containers.

Or: Using Docker now and need to deal with real-world problems? I'm here for you! See my production topics around Swarm, Kubernetes, secrets, logging, rolling upgrades, and more.

BONUS: This course comes with Slack Chat, Discord Chat server, and live monthly YouTube Q&As with me!

"I've followed another course on (Udemy). This one is a million times more in depth." "...when it comes to all the docker stuff, this is the course you're gonna want to take" - Student Udemy Review

Why should you learn from me? Why trust me to teach you the best ways to use Docker?   (Hi, I'm Bret, please allow me to talk about myself for a sec):

  • I'm A Practitioner. Welcome to the real world: I've got 30 years of sysadmin and developer experience, over 30 certifications, and have been using Docker and the container ecosystem for my consulting clients and my own companies since Docker's early days. Learn from someone who's run hundreds of containers across dozens of projects and organizations.

  • I'm An Educator. Learn from someone who knows how to make a syllabus: I want to help you. People say I'm good at it. For the last few years, I've trained thousands of people on using Docker in workshops, conferences, and meetups. See me teach at events like DockerCon, O'Reilly Velocity, GOTO Conf, and Linux Open Source Summit. I hope you'll decide to learn with me, and join the fantastic online Docker community.

  • I Lead Communities. Also, I'm a Docker Captain, meaning that Docker Inc. thinks I know a thing or two about Docker and that I do well in sharing it with others. In the real-world: I help run two local meetups in our fabulous tech community in Norfolk/Virginia Beach USA. I help online: usually in Slack, Discord, and Twitter, where I learn from and help others.

"Because of the Docker Mastery course, I landed my first DevOps job. Thank you Captain!" - Student Ronald Alonzo

"There are a lot of Docker courses on Udemy -- but ignore those, Bret is the single most qualified person to teach you." - Kevin Griffin, Microsoft MVP

Giving Back: a portion of my profit on this course will be donated to supporting open source and protecting our freedoms online! This course is only made possible by the amazing people creating open source. I'm standing on the shoulders of (open source) giants! Donations will be split between my favorite charities including the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Free Software Foundation. Look them up. They're awesome!

This is a living course and will be updated as Docker and Kubernetes features change.

This course is designed to be fast at getting you started but also get you deep into the "why" of things. Simply the fastest and best way to learn the latest container skills. Look at the scope of topics in the Session and see the breadth of skills you will learn.

Also included are Slack and Discord servers with 50k+ students for getting help with this course and continuing your Docker and DevOps learning with help from myself and other students.

"Bret's course is a level above all of those resources, and if you're struggling to get a handle on Docker, this is the resource you need to invest in." - Austin Tindle, Course Student

Some of the many cool things you'll do in this course:

  • Edit web code on your machine while it's served up in a container

  • Lock down your apps in private networks that only expose necessary ports

  • Create a 3-node Swarm cluster in the cloud

  • Install Kubernetes and learn the leading server cluster tools

  • Use Virtual IP's for built-in load balancing in your cluster

  • Optimize your Dockerfiles for faster building and tiny deploys

  • Build/Publish your own custom application images

  • Learn the differences between Kubernetes and Swarm

  • Create your own image registry

  • Use Swarm Secrets to encrypt your environment configs, even on disk

  • Deploy container updates in a rolling always-up design

  • Create the config utopia of a single set of YAML files for local dev, CI testing, and prod cluster deploys

  • And so much more...

After taking this course, you'll be able to:

  • Use Docker in your daily developer and/or sysadmin roles

  • Deploy apps to Kubernetes

  • Make Dockerfiles and Compose files

  • Build multi-node Swarm clusters and deploying H/A containers

  • Make Kubernetes YAML manifests and deploy using infrastructure-as-code methods

  • Build a workflow of using Docker in dev, then test/CI, then production with YAML

  • Protect your keys, TLS certificates, and passwords with encrypted secrets

  • Keep your Dockerfiles and images small, efficient, and fast

  • Run apps in Docker, Swarm, and Kubernetes and understand the pros/cons of each

  • Develop locally while your code runs in a container

  • Protect important persistent data in volumes and bind mounts

  • Lead your team into the future with the latest Docker container skills!

Extra things that come with this course:

  • Access to the course Slack team, for getting help/advice from me and other students.

  • Bonus videos I put elsewhere like YouTube, linked to from this course's resources.

  • Join me on weekly DevOps Live streams and demos on YouTube Live.

  • Tons of reference links to supplement this content.

  • Updates to content as Docker changes their features on these topics.

  • ● I appreciate the effort put into creating this course, but unfortunately, it feels very outdated. Much of the material was recorded in 2017, and there have been significant changes in the technologies since then. While there are popups noting “old way,” they don’t explain what the new approach is, which makes it hard to know if I’m learning best practices for 2025.The Git and GitHub sections, for example, present Pull Requests as if they are a brand-new concept, which shows how dated the content is. Additionally, the code in the repository often doesn’t match what’s shown in the videos, so I ended up ignoring the provided code and just following along with the videos. In later sections, the videos include a lot of memes and bright colors, which I found distracting and made it harder to focus on the actual content. Overall, I think the course needs a major update to reflect current standards and improve the learning experience.Great course, but the content is outdated. Please redo the course, forget all the partial updates and record a better versionNOT FOR BEGINNERS!!!!!!, VERY VERY VERY OLD LIKELY 2017/2018 CONTENT!!!!!! And very lengthy and useless content and if you wanted to upload live chat with docker captain/ working professional you would have uploaded a YouTube link... Only 5 to 10% of the course content was for beginners to understand other than that you were doing on your own just typing the commands and just doing all the stuffs by your own.... VERY VERY HIGHLY NOT NOT AND NOT RECOMMENDED. IF YOU STILL WANT TO ENROLL THEN YOU ARE WASTING YOUR TIME MONEY AND LEARNING OLD STUFF.THIS COURSE IS FOR ONLY PROFESSIONALS WHO HAS STUDIED / WORKED ON THE TOPICS FOR YEARS AND THEY ARE HERE FOR THIS FOR THE OLD STUFF AND WATCHING THE VIDEOS OF THE INSTRUCTOR INTERACTING WITH OTHER PROFESSIONALS.VERY VERY HIGHLY NOT NOT AND NOT RECOMMENDED FOR BEGINNERS!!!! AND NOT FOR 2025!!!!!!!!!!!!This is a painful one. The start was pretty good - it had hands-on command line and very practical experiences and it really helped me, but thats about it. The lessons became more convoluted as it progresses. Adds on different updates as new sections that are disjointed, totally not integrated with the basic learning, teaches pointless things that nobody will use. This udemy lesson clearly needs an overhaul and overall, just a reset. Author also includes his presentations and conferences to "monetize" and sell them. This was just distasteful, why not leave it as a separate resources link?Outdated lectures. Added contents are minute long reads of "this is no longer true since the videos are 8 years (and counting) old. Read this on the Docker site". Bret is responsive to comments, tho. He is very capable I'm sure, but the course....Not updatedOld materialThe course is built almost entirely on presentations and lectures and quickly becomes boring. There is hardly any hands-on practice at all.Important topics are covered in just a few minutes of lecture.A very disappointing course, especially the Kubernetes section.I believe the instructor is knowledgeable about Docker whereas K8s course content seems average. The biggest drawback of this course is that they seem to be struggling to keep up with the updates. Most of the lab videos do not work as demonstrated. While they have added supplemental sections to indicate the drift, the problem is that there are way too many of them now. Patchwork seems rampant, and that is crippling the content. Not the learning experience I expected!Outdated videos vs project that we have to download. Instead of keeping videos up-to-date -> one page what to change locally while watching outdated video... not a good practice. As many other I also feel the assignments were nothing to do with the actual lectures before that and we must to do something we didn't watched/learned. There are many things that can be improved here from my perspective.Too complex explanationtoo much theoretical content. not usefull for beginners that try to learn the basics... you could do kubernetes project or assignment instead this section. very disappointed.I would not say it's a bad course but sadly a lot of information is outdated, and there are exceptions on how to execute things everywhere which makes it more challenging to follow. The starting three assignments seemed to be quite unclear on what to do and a bit too hard but after that it feels like it started to get better!Update 1: The assignments are just too complicated and the explanation is horribleUpdate 2: This is not a course that you can just follow along, there are several parts which does not work if using docker playground that you have to scour for info and workarounds... really annoyingHonestly I've seen better courses on youtube. Also this course feels too much outdated. Lots of exercises we have to use other containers than the ones suggested in the videos and for someone that just started with docker for the first time lots of lectures doesn't feel really clear. Maybe this course is good for intermediate people but certainly not for begginers.ちょっと内容が古い。
